PayPal Growth Counterbalances eBay's Slower
Growth

OnlyEBAY submits:

PayPal had Q2 revenue of $602 million and is on track to reach 2008 revenue of $2.5 billion and and somewhere around $3.3 billion in 2009. This implies a 2009 top-line growth rate of 32% which would be a modest deceleration from current rates and assumes PayPal will continue to be able to counterbalance lower growth rates on-EBAY with an ever-increasing proportion of business coming from Merchant Services.

PayPal's operating margin (excluding options) is expected to come close to 20% in 2009. This would yield 2009 pro-forma operating income of $660 million and tax-adjusted pro-forma earnings of around $500 million. If we assume a forward P/E multiple of 30x (restricting PEG to under 1.0x) we get a current valuation of roughly $15 billion.

Invest In Emerging Market SMEs

The Social Equity Venture Fund (S.E.VEN), just launched a competition to develop new indicators and models for investment in emerging market small and medium-sized enterprises.

The competition is open to everyone, and is offering U.S. $50,000 in funds awarded for the best ideas. Entrepreneurs in developing markets often cite a lack of financial capital as the biggest barrier to growing their business. This competition, and its results, are one concrete step in demonstrating the power of entrepreneurship, and business, as a sustainable solution to world poverty.

S.E.VEN hopes that by opening up the discussion to anyone interested in participating that they can come up with more diverse and effective ways of looking at investment in emerging market SMEs.

Full details of the competition are available here.

21 Signs that you are losing interest in your job

At some point in time most of us have been through periods where we lose interest in our jobs or assignments we are involved in. This is only a problem if the lack of interest persists for more than a few weeks and noticeable changes in behavior occur.[...]

Disorderly Conduct

One of the biggest issues for people who are having financial difficulties is the fact that everything about their money is disorganized. They pay bills late, don?t pay them at all, or pay the same bill twice. Yup, I?ve seen it with m?own eyes, people. They transfer money back and forth between numerous accounts, often [...]

The Top Five In-Demand Majors

In case you were wondering, here are the top five in-demand majors (I can't tell if the salary assigned to them is a starting salary or an average):

1. Mechanical Engineering ($57,821) -- Job outlook: As more engineers retire, and many professionals transfer to managerial positions, job opportunities are good.

2. Accounting ($47,429) -- Job outlook: Thanks to retirees and a faster-than-average job growth due to new business and changing financial laws and regulations, accountants can enjoy favorable job opportunities.

3. Finance ($48,616) -- Job outlook: Personal financial advisors are projected to be among the 10 fastest-growing occupations. Though job growth is strong across the board, competition is still keen for finance positions.

4. Business Administration/Management ($44,195) -- Job outlook: Jobs are projected to grow as quickly as average among all occupations. Competition for top-level business administration management jobs will be high while more opportunities will exist for lower-level management jobs and facility managers.

5. Civil Engineering ($50,940) -- Job outlook: Employment growth for civil engineers is expected to move at a pace that is faster than the average for all occupations.

#3 made me laugh. Are you sure they didn't mean "salesman"? ;-)

We want YOU to speak at the Thin Air New Media
Summit in Denver, Colorado!

I'm cribbing some of this material from Goldie Katsu, who is the chairperson of the Thin Air Summit. Read on, though!

For those of you who have joined us at the Denver area Podcaster's meetups you have heard some updates on the Thin Air Summit, but an update is long overdue.

The executive committee, Kit Seeborg, Rob McNealy, Erik Boles, Shandra Botello, Brian Yuhnke, Goldie Katsu and I have been doing a lot of planning and we wanted to bring you up to date and ask for your help.

The event will be happening at the Art Institute of Colorado, on November 7-9th. This first year event will be limited to 100 people making this event real opportunity to connect with the other attendees, share ideas and learn more about creating new media in depth.

For those who will be unable to attend this year, they will be able to watch the live cast of the keynotes and after the event the sessions will be released as podcasts.

The event itself will start on Friday night, November 7th with an introductory workshop. The workshop will be about "Everything You Wanted to Know About New Media but were Afraid to Ask". [With apologies to Woody Allen --Dave]

Saturday we transition to the conference with the focus on in-depth educational sessions and panels on creating, promoting and understanding new media.

In keeping with the Independent and Connected theme, the instructor led sessions are broken into three independent tracks:

  • Text - blogging, microblogging, web publishing
  • Audio - Podcasting, live audio shows, music
  • Video - Podcasting, Live Streaming, Video dialogues
The panels, which both start and end the day, will bring all of the attendees together as we explore common themes and look at defining and understanding new media in its many forms.

Right now we have a call for presentations open and this is where we need your help. Help spread the word about the call for presentations and if you have an expertise in new media and could lead an education session in one the above areas stop by the Thin Air Summit website and fill out the proposal form at:

http://www.thinairsummit.com/presenting/

If you haven't spoken at a conference before, this could be a good place for you to seek to either pull together or join a panel, and if you have spoken before but don't tend to travel out of Colorado too often, this is also a great opportunity for you to get involved in a grassroots Podcamp-esque event. Please, send us your best ideas!

Thanks!

I Quit!

Well, I’m not sure exactly what to call it: retired, semi-retired, quit, took a leave of absence, became a stay at home mom, became a professional blogger. Whatever “it” is… I’m done. I’m going to start withdrawing from my retirement accounts, hang out with my kids more and write a few mornings each week. Getting [...]
